28. Roberto Bolaño, Nazi Literature in the Americas
This is my favorite Bolaño besides 2666, I think. It can be hard to pull off the “encyclopedia” format well but of course he does it fucking perfectly. The book is structured in sections by theme (i.e. one is Wandering Women of Letters) and then within each section a number of short biographies of the mythical right wing authors in question. He sets them in seamlessly among real people alive and writing at the time and though they can read clinically he manages to impart real life to these people, some of whom you only meet for like three paragraphs. And as always the surreal weaving together of words and politics and almost scatological dark humor… unparalleled. One of my favorite lines was in the section on Luz Mendiluce: she remained lucid (or furious, as she liked to say) until the very end.

My favorite Bolano as well, with 2666 as the top favorite:-)

Finally Red Diary/ Re(a)d Diary is back from printer:-) Very proud to see it in English and really proud of the experiment with Old friend Steve Seagle, who has written a fantastic story. Let us know what you think:-)
